Choose service before size
Write a short specification describing the uses, required usable volume, outlet flow, installation space and maintenance access. A tank is one component of a system, so compare options against the same specification. A bigger container is not automatically better if it cannot be filled regularly, is difficult to service or needs a costly pump arrangement.
Distinguish nominal from usable capacity
The volume on a product label may include water below the outlet and space that cannot be filled under the proposed arrangement. Ask for dimensions, operating water levels and connection positions. Specify usable storage in procurement documents. That avoids comparing one supplier’s nominal capacity with another supplier’s usable capacity as though they were identical.
At 75 L/day these give 24 and 28 days, provided both start full.
A: 2,000 − 200 L; B: 2,200 − 100 L.
A practical comparison
Consider two illustrative options: tank A has 2,000 litres nominal capacity with 200 litres inaccessible; tank B has 2,200 litres nominal with 100 litres inaccessible. Usable capacities are 1,800 and 2,100 litres. At 75 litres daily demand, full-tank volume coverage is 24 and 28 days. The four-day difference is meaningful only if local rain can fill the extra usable space.
Compare the complete installation
Include foundation, transport, lifting, pipework, screens, overflow, delivery equipment and commissioning in both quotations. Record which tasks remain your responsibility. A low tank-only price can reverse after delivery through a restricted entrance or excavation in difficult ground. Give suppliers the same site information and request exclusions in writing.
Check lifecycle practicality
Inspect access to filters, valves and level indicators. Consider whether replacement parts are available and how the system can be isolated for repairs. Keep manufacturer instructions with the installation record. Where children or animals could reach the tank, specify secured openings. Never treat an access hatch as permission for an untrained person to enter a confined storage space.
Decision checklist
- Document usable capacity.
- Check the connected rainfall supply.
- Measure delivery access.
- Verify foundation and filled weight.
- Compare complete quotes.
- Retain maintenance access.
- Check overflow destination.
- Confirm local installation conditions.
- Select a system you can operate and maintain rather than the largest label.
